I think this is also relevant in the context of official expansions and speaks to why so many players only use the base game. That being said, there are now quite a few variants to the game including those by the designers and chief playtesters, so I feel this list is worth compiling.

We should not design one big, all-encompassing expansion, like Battles of the Third Age was, but a series of somewhat smaller thematic expansions. In each expansion, we could look at what we had done in Battles of the Third Age, but expand it further, so that we could include gradually all the protagonists that we missed in the original game.

That was actually distributed by Fantasy Flight games, and it is the 1st edition of the game, with the 1st edition expansion included (containing, the ents, the mercenaries, some of the Lords like Galadriel and Saruman, the Balrog, the mouth of Sauron, and the still unreleased for the 2nd edition, siege engines).
